Preheat the oven to 175°C. Gather all ingredients and halve the butternut squash lengthwise. Remove seeds.

Arrange squash halves, cut-side down, in a 23 x 33 cm baking dish. Pour water into the dish around the squash halves.

Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for approximately 90 minutes, or until the squash is very tender when pierced with a fork. Add additional water if necessary to prevent the dish from drying out.

Remove dish from the oven. Carefully transfer each squash half to a plate, cut-side up. Top each half with pieces of butter and season generously with salt and ground black pepper. Serve immediately.
